I met Robert Cray on his first national tour, they were playing small venues like the Canal Street Tavern http://www.canalstreettavern.com/index.php in my home town of Dayton, OH.

I think it was a wed night, but I remember that there was only about 10 people in the club. Cray sat with me all night drinking beers. The tour had his band coming thru the Mid-West to the East Coast, and back the same way. He was booked to play at Canal Street in 12wks. He told me to bring my guitar & amp, and that he would let me sit-in for a couple of songs.

About two weeks before he came back, I had a bike accident where I broke my elbow and two fingers. But by this time, Albert King had recorded Cray’s ‘Phonebooth’, and the club was packed. There was a table reserved for the band and Cray had me sit with him.

I first saw Robert Cray at Imatra Big Band Festival last summer (2008) and fell in love with his music. I did hear his music few months before that and I liked it, but the small live gig he did last july was something special. I remember how I wandered outside a tent they were suppose to play later in evening and how I was exited just to hear them doing soundcheck and play “poor Johnny”. After the gig, the road crew was nice and gave me one of his picks even thou they were really busy taking RCB’s stuff off the stage. It was a experince that I’ll surely remember the rest of my life. Thank you Robert and “old” band.

Never had the opportunity. Hopefully he will visit Texas (San Antonio please!) soon.

The First time I saw Robert was at Madison Square Garden back in 1986. He opened for Eric Clapton. He was so great that a friend and I drove upstate In New York to see him again. The last time I saw him was July 19,2009 in Tarrytown, N.Y. Which was my 30th show. This man is the the greatest!

The first time I saw him I’m not sure, but one time that sticks out was at the Downunder Tavern in Pullman, WA in maybe, hmm, 1977? He was underappreciated. They used to gig around the Northwest a lot.

The last time I saw him was at the Rainbow Tavern in Seattle in 1984. It was also the last time I saw a very important person in my life and we danced together.

Well, I see he is coming to the Snoqualmie Casino in January, and if he can keep on keeping on I guess I can.

I saw him on the TV during the Seville Guitar festivals, in the last 80’s I think, and was blown away by him.  I was then lucky enough to see him in London during the ‘Some Rainy Morning’ tour.  Been awaiting another tour since, and now there is one!!!!

Hurrah!!!

Mark.
